Midlife: A time of crisis or time to bloom?

Friday, February 17th, 2012

At our Inner Garden workshops and retreats, we talk about the importance of listening to your inner voice, where you’ll hear the answers to life questions that are right for you. This is definitely a challenge since there are so many voices in our lives competing for our attention. By spending just a few minutes a day in spiritual practice—journaling, drawing, meditating, taking a walk, or whatever activity helps you quiet down and listen—you start inviting that inner voice to play a bigger role in your life. You start shifting… from other people’s expectations to your own strength and creativity.

As women, it’s important for us to make friends with that inner voice so we can share our gifts with the world. And there may be no time in which that’s more critical than at midlife. This is a stage that can seem scariest on the life journey because the years stretch out before us with no kids, no definite career plan, and maybe without a partner. But it can also be the richest and most productive time of life for exactly those same reasons. In the freedom of midlife and beyond, there’s time to dig more deeply into the soil of your being and discover the seeds that have been just waiting to grow.

A few weeks ago, a wonderful New York writer named Haydee Camacho interviewed us about women in midlife transitions. Her article just went live on eHow.com, and we encourage you to take a look. No matter what stage of life you’re in, you’ll find wisdom in it and inspiration for tending your inner garden daily. See the whole story here.
