Writing as a Spiritual Practice

Monday, Oct. 29; Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26; December 3

6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

3131 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA

Presented by Deb Engle and Diane Glass

In this six-week class, we’ll help you take concrete, intentional steps toward writing, whether you’re starting a journaling practice or want to write for publication and need motivation and guidance.

You’ll discover…

  • New journaling techniques for beginning or experienced journalers.
  • Questions to help you explore deeper, more meaningful themes in your life.
  • How to make room for writing in your life.
  • How to find a spiritual thread in your life story.
  • How to write about moments that matter.
  • How to use writing to heal.
  • Skill builders that can make your writing shine.
  • How to turn journal entries into stories written for others to read.

Each session will include writing activities, opportunities for constructive writing critiques and a topic designed to move your writing forward. We’ll incorporate techniques from the Tending Your Inner GardenĀ® program to help you dig deep into your own life experiences so you can express them in your own unique way.

It’s all designed to help you find the deep, resonant themes that will inspire and enrich your writing.

  • We’ll practice “visual journaling,” encouraging you to sketch the images that come to mind during quiet reflection.
  • You’ll learn to look at your life as a continually changing landscape of nature. When have you experienced an inner Winter? Spring? Summer? Fall? What have the seasons taught you?
  • You’ll learn about a daily practice known in ancient times as the “examen,” in which you can reflect back at the end of each day and reflect on your emotional responses.
  • You’ll connect with your Inner Advisor through visualization and learn how your Advisor can inform your writing.
  • You’ll have the chance to reflect on what’s sacred in your life right now. What brings you peace, joy, contentment and a sense of connection with all that is?

And much more!

If your creative voice is longing to be expressed, this is your time and opportunity to answer that call in a community of support.

Free book!

Your registration includes a copy of Winter: Women’s Stories, Poems and Inspiration for the Season of Rest and Renewal. We’ll use the essays and poetry in this volume as inspiration for your own creative voice.
